Interior designer Anna’s Attic talks about home renovation and Karndean

Posted on the 18/01/2021 by Anna's Attic

This month, we’re excited to welcome interior designer and guest blogger Anna’s Attic, who recently completed renovating her home. We invited Anna to share her story with us.

“Hi, I’m Anna, interior designer, online homewares shop owner and blogger from @annas_attic_interiors_shop.

My family and I moved into our current home, a barn conversion in March of 2018. Having spent the previous 12 months renovating the rest of the house, in the summer we finally began the renovation of our master bedroom and en suite. I really wanted our bedroom to be a beautiful sanctuary to relax in, the inspiration for this was the beautiful Chinese silk wallpaper we'd left behind in our previous home. I sourced a stunning mural featuring Chinese flora, fauna, birds and butterflies, which was the starting point of the scheme.

The mural is such a statement that I wanted the rest of the room and the adjoining en suite to be calm and relaxing and have a classic feel using natural tones and finishes.

Throughout the renovations, our priority had been to get it right first time, this meant really considering how the spaces should function and how we wanted them to feel as well as the aesthetics. This left us with little choice but to change every aspect during our bedroom/en suite renovation. We purchased the house from an elderly lady, our bedroom and ensuite resembled something from Fawlty Towers; think pastel carpet, rag roll wallpaper, flowery curtains and a beige bathroom suite.

Once the rooms were cleared, carpet ripped up, walls stripped and old fixtures and fittings removed I was able to see the space for what it was, a blank canvas.

With the focus of the design being the mural I wanted to use muted, natural colours and finishes throughout. Painting our existing antique furniture in shades to complement the scheme made the large pieces less intrusive and pulled the scheme together.

New radiators were a must, we replaced the existing ones with traditional column style radiators in anthracite, much more suitable for the property. Luxurious bedding, throws, cushions and a couple of velvet occasional pieces of furniture further soften the look.

In the bathroom we fitted a traditional style toilet, simple shower enclosure with white marble tiles and a counter top basin on top of a vintage wooden cupboard, the look has been accessorised with vintage items and artwork.

Being a lover of natural materials I’ve always loved the look of wooden floorboards but don't enjoy the drafts or noise that come with them or the required maintenance. I longed for a classic dark wooden floor which would ground the scheme and fit perfectly with the age of our property.

It was really important to me to be able to use the same flooring from the bedroom through into the en suite, so I had to consider slippage and water resistance as well as it being warm under foot. We have a dog and as such it was important that whatever flooring we chose was super durable and pet-friendly too. I sent for some samples of Karndean's Handcrafted range, Hickory Peppercorn and Hickory Nutmeg, I loved them both but decided that the Hickory Peppercorn would offer the classic dark floorboards look to fit the scheme perfectly. Our fitter East Riding Floors offered various laying patterns but in the end I chose brick effect, which I felt best mimicked traditional floorboards, the fitting process was really stress free with one site visit to measure up and a couple of days fitting.

The quality of Karndean’s products and wood-effect designs are the best I’ve seen. The product I chose has a lifetime residential guarantee and is very hard-wearing, as we don't plan on moving again I wanted to choose something that would look good for many years to come so Karndean was the perfect fit for us.

It’s so lovely to finally have completed our renovation and have this beautiful space to retreat to after a hectic day, I’m looking forward to creating memories with family and friends for many years to come in our beautiful new home.
