How to link your indoor and outdoor rooms

Posted on the 11/05/2023 by Karndean Designflooring

The sun is finally shining, we’ve dusted off our garden furniture and set up the BBQ in readiness for a summer of indoor-outdoor living. But did you know, if you consider your garden facing rooms and garden as a single space, the result could be transformative!

Linking your inside and outside rooms will visually connect your garden with your interior, maximising the natural beauty of your home. By bringing elements of your inside out to your garden and aspects of your garden indoors, you’ll be surprised how much bigger and liveable your home will feel.

Just a few simple tricks can make all the difference. Here are our top tips for creating a seamless flow.

Make the most of vistas

Arrange your indoor furniture to ensure uninterrupted views of your garden’s best features and add houseplants close to doors and window to echo the personality of your garden planting. If you’re planning a major home renovation project, consider larger glazed doors such as sliding or bi-fold doors which let sunlight flood in and open wide for an uninterrupted threshold.

Connect with natural finishes

By using similar flooring materials inside and out, the transition from one space to the other will look and feel effortless. If you have limestone or slate paving on your patio, you might look to one of our stone inspired designs such as Honed Pebble Slate or Smoked Concrete. With an authentic look of the real thing, you’ll also find our stone design flooring much kinder to bare feet, spills and other accidents.

If you prefer a wood design, pair your stone paving with a similar cool grey tone such as Grey Limed Oak. To complement decking or wood fencing, look to one of our iconic oak floors such as Blond Oak or Glacier Oak.

Create a garden room

Arranging your garden as if it were an interior room, with dedicated spaces for cooking, eating, relaxing, will encourage you to spend more time outside. Perhaps mirror your kitchen island with a similar outdoor cooking space and opt for comfy seating that wouldn’t look out of place in your sitting room. Then add a coffee table and an outdoor rug to instantly create a space where you’ll love to relax and entertain.

Coordinate colours

By using a single colour palette in both your garden and connecting indoor spaces, your eye will move freely from one space to the other, blurring the boundaries. Introduce your favourite home colours in garden elements such as furniture cushions and throws, plant pots and flowers. Then use the same cosy lighting tricks on your evening patio as you would indoors, with soft solar lamps and candles (citronella candles will also help keep those pesky midges at bay) which give a gentle glow to help you relax at the end of the day.
