When your bathroom is on the small side, the right layout and décor will help every inch work as hard as possible. Refitting a bathroom can be quite an investment so making decisions on fittings, layout and finishing touches can be daunting.

Sometimes it’s difficult to know where to start so here are our top tips for creating a dreamy sanctuary in a small bathroom or ensuite:

  • Review the current layout and consider if the space could work better if you rearranged the fittings. Do you need a bath or would a shower be more useful?
  • Toilets, sinks and baths come in a wide range of sizes so shopping around for more compact fittings can help you reclaim a few precious inches
  • A sink unit can also offer useful storage and help reduce clutter
  • Opting for wall hung fittings will leave the floor clear and make the room appear larger
  • Keeping the colour palette pale, neutral and simple will give a light airy feel that’s easy on the eyeGo large with a statement mirror to reflect light around the room
  • Introduce a natural look with wood or stone design flooring and a potted plant or two

When Becca Napper, who shares her home renovation on Instagram @becshomestyle, redesigned her ensuite and guest bathrooms she wanted to create a personal retreat that would also complement the rest of her home.

Becca explained: “As our house is an older style we have embraced this classic timelessness with exposed original floorboards and a pale white colour scheme throughout. I wanted to continue this calm, relaxed style into our bathrooms so the look I’ve gone for is very traditional and understated.”

Becca has maximised a sense of space by opting for a walk-in shower with frameless panels and multifunctional fittings such as the heated towel rail and dual sinks which add a touch of luxury as well as useful storage. A slimline blind provides privacy when needed and lets light stream in through the window while an oversized mirror bounces this natural light back into the room.

When it came to flooring, Becca wanted a look that complemented their exposed floorboards but also a surface that would be practical and comfortable under bare feet. She chose Coastal Sawn Oak from the Knight Tile range with its muted warm tones and intricate grain details.

She said: “We have Karndean flooring in our kitchen and it’s been so hard wearing I knew this was a flooring brand we could trust. We decided to run the planks away from the door to mimic the direction of the original floorboards underneath and take your eye along the tiles. This would definitely be my top tip for making a room feel bigger. I am so happy with the finish and how real the flooring looks. What’s more, I don’t have to worry about splashes or hygiene as the floor is waterproof and so easy to clean.”
