Our style predictions for 2019

Posted on the 04/01/2019 by Karndean Designflooring

We’re back from our festive Christmas break full of enthusiasm and are looking forward to sharing some amazing commercial interiors with you over the next 12 months!

Last year saw a continuing theme of biophilic design to support health and wellbeing, and also an increasing demand for the look of concrete flooring but without the practical drawbacks. Will these trends continue into 2019?

Here are our five style predictions for the coming year.

Colour trends go bold

In 2019, as commercial interiors increasingly reflect residential interiors, designs will incorporate home colour trends in indulgent moody shades of mustard, teal, emerald green and midnight blues so dark they’re almost black.

Featuring colour blocks or chromatic colour schemes, designs will seek to connect the interior to its local environment through colour, pattern and materials. Such bolder palettes will create warm, intimate interiors that encourage occupants of commercial spaces to emotionally engage with their surroundings and help create a more personalised experience.

Resimercial design focus for workplaces

Employers are increasingly looking to create working spaces where individuals can work flexibly and collaborate in shared spaces. By introducing resimercial design, incorporating aspects of residential settings into employment spaces, employees can engage with the working space in a way that meets their individual needs.

Workplaces divided into different working zones, including hubs of soft seating, informal meeting spaces and quiet working booths, will provide facilities for employees to interact, benefit from healthy levels of activity and maximise their productivity.

Natural materials and domestic scale furnishings are an important factor to the success of a resimercial design, creating a friendly environment that is a far cry from the formal corporate world of the past.

Industrial style gains authenticity

For some time, commercial interiors have incorporated industrial style with exposed brickwork, concrete flooring and feature cabling. We anticipate that this year will see this trend maturing, with designs paying homage to the building’s original function and incorporating resimercial style with residential style furnishings.

Converted industrial buildings will increasingly retain original features to create an authentic ‘old meets new’ style, preserving its historic local relevance. Equipped for its new function as an office, hotel or restaurant, warm natural finishes such as wood and stone bring a more human scale and intimate feel.

Biophilic design supports wellbeing

Biophilic design has continued to build momentum as the physical and mental health benefits of engaging with nature are recognised and incorporated into commercial interiors. In spaces such as workplaces, hospitality or healthcare, the wellbeing of employees, guests and visitors is supported by connecting the interior to the natural world outside.

Natural colours, such as greens, burnt orange or brown, in furnishings or flooring provide a welcoming vibe, while natural daylight and views to the outside world are important to maintain natural daily rhythms and support cycles of activity, concentration and rest.

By engaging all five senses – sight, sound, smell, taste and touch – biophilic designs will create reassuring and restorative environments using sophisticated combinations of planting, natural light, textures and patterns.

Abstract and geometric pattern

Geometric patterns offer a more abstract interpretation of natural design, from the regular repeat of beehive hexagons and herringbone to random arrangements of line and triangles.

When the calming geometry of natural patterns is balanced with gentle colour palettes, a bold geometric design can support wellbeing as well as add character and a sense of fun.

Evocative of bold retro styles, complementary geometric patterns can be introduced on walls, floors and furnishings.  For a more contemporary look, an eclectic mix of clashing patterns in a calm colour palette can bring a sense of the unexpected.
