Make Your New House Feel Like Home

Posted on the 2019-07-15 by Karndean Designflooring

You’ve just closed on a new house – congratulations! This space is where you will spend many years to come, so it’s important to make it feel like home. There are some projects you can tackle before moving in to make the space feel like it’s yours and others you can work on once the boxes are unpacked and you’ve had a chance to settle in.

Before Move-In

Check your list of projects and select the ones that take up the largest amount of square footage to tackle before moving in. These typically include walls and floors.

Flooring: Do the current floors need to be replaced and do they fit your lifestyle? For example, if you have young children and pets, a cold and hard surface like ceramic tile may not be the best option for your family. Our wide variety of gluedownloose lay and rigid core luxury vinyl allows you to create a floor that reflects your personal style and put your personal stamp on your new home. Be sure to protect your floors when your belongings are moved into the home by using sheets of cardboard to prevent any scratches.

Vanilla Oak

Painting: Painting is a cost-effective way to make a big transformation. If time allows, it’s much easier to paint an empty space than one filled with boxes. However, if you’re in a time crunch, you can move-in first and keep boxes and furniture near the center of the room until the painting can be completed.

Deep Clean: As with painting, it’s much easier to clean an empty house. Cleaning before you move in cements the feeling that this is a “new beginning.” Plus, then you can begin unpacking and placing furniture as soon as everything arrives.

After Move-In

Unpack Key Areas First: After long days of packing and moving, it’s important that the things you need most are quickly accessible. We recommend unpacking key areas first, including the bathroom, kitchen and bedrooms. Plus, once you get bedroom furniture into your kids’ rooms, allowing them to arrange some things in their space, it will keep them busy.

Hang Family Photos: Surrounding yourself with pictures, your children’s drawings or other items that remind you of family and loved ones will instantly make you feel at home.

Cook a Family Dinner: The days leading up to moving out and shortly after moving in are usually filled with dining out or ordering delivery. Break in your new kitchen and dining area by cooking a family meal.

Throw a House-Warming Party: Once everything is unpacked and in its place, invite your new neighbors, friends and family over to celebrate. Making new memories will certainly make your space feel like home!
