Which Format is Right for Me?

Which Format of Luxury Vinyl is Right for Me?

Karndean Designflooring

When choosing a Karndean Designfloor, among the many things to consider aside from color and wood or stone, is the format of our luxury vinyl flooring you should use. Luxury vinyl tile (LVT) is our specialty and the only type of flooring we develop. We put the same thought and care into the development of all our designs whether it’s in a gluedown, loose lay or rigid core format. While any of our formats can be installed in any room in the home, you may be wondering what are the differences between each of these formats and how do you know which one is right for you?

Gluedown vs. Floating Floors

A gluedown floor is fully adhered to the subfloor below. Our gluedown ranges are Art Select, Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Van Gogh, Opus and Knight Tile.

A “floating floor” is simply a floor that is not fully adhered to the subfloor below. We offer two styles of floating floors: Karndean LooseLay (“loose lay” format, requires adhesive around the perimeter*) and Korlok (“rigid core” format, no adhesive required).

Why would you want a gluedown floor?

  • Design options: Our widest range of designs, colors, textures and formats.
  • Personalization: With our gluedown ranges, you have complete control over the look of your floor, from the lay pattern to the incorporation of our design strips and borders.
  • Ability to repair individual planks and tiles.
  • Planks and tiles are permanently secured to the subfloor.

Why would you want a floating floor?

  • Acoustic qualities: Our floating floors help to reduce noise transfer to lower levels of a home, perfect for playrooms or children’s bedrooms.
  • Quick weekend project: Benefit from minimal disruption and a quick installation. Please note, we recommend a professional installation of our products.
  • Minimal subfloor preparation: This varies by the type of floor you currently have.*

What’s the difference between Karndean LooseLay and Korlok?

With Karndean LooseLay and LooseLay Longboard, you can have a floating floor with design flexibility and even incorporate multiple colors into one design. You can carry your chosen design throughout the space without the need for transition strips. Learn more about Karndean LooseLay’s design capabilities here. Depending on the size of the space, your installer may need to apply a grid-pattern of adhesive to ensure the planks or tiles stay in place. If your current floor is hard on your feet, this is our most ergonomic flooring option, meaning it provides the most cushioning underfoot.

If you’re searching for a traditional hardwood look and are in a bit of a time crunch, or currently have engineered hardwoord or laminate flooring and don't wish to adjust your door jambs, Korlok is right for you. Our Korlok ranges are secured in place with a click-locking mechanism, so if you’re used to an interlocking floor you may prefer to stick to a familiar format. Our Korlok Select range features the added security of our HoldFast 5G locking mechanism and HoldFast Lifetime Warranty, which guarantees securely-locked planks will not come apart at the end seams.
