Create the Ultimate Home Lounge Area

Karndean Designflooring

Whether you’re remodeling your basement or are looking for a use for your bonus room, every home needs the ultimate area to enjoy time with family and friends. With the holidays approaching maybe you’re looking to upgrade your space to the ideal social gathering spot. If so, here are a few things to consider before starting your project…

First, think about the size of the space. If you have more of an open floor plan, you could create a versatile lounge space that allows for both entertaining and includes a game area to occupy the kids. If your space is smaller or closed in by walls, you may prefer to make it a single-use space like a game room, bar, or seating area.

Next, consider the use of the space. Do your gatherings tend to be more conversational or will there be things to do like watch movies or play pool? Is it more family-centered or for entertaining guests? Taking these factors into consideration will help you determine how much and what type of seating to use, lighting, and what types of accessories will enhance the mood of the space.

As shown below in the Ultimate House, designed by Infinity Custom Homes, this home theater includes décor and furnishings that fit the intended use of the space - plush, comfortable seating, a cozy shag rug, adjustable lighting, an adjoining bar area to sit with drinks, and of course a big screen television. These elements combined create the perfect space for hosting family movie nights or gathering friends to watch the big game.

Finally, consider the overall style of your home. Barbara Schmidt of studiobstyle created this home lounge moodboard, which sets the scene for a contemporary, industrial lounge space. The inspiration for this lounge was the “ultimate man cave” located in a sophisticated urban loft. The use of dark countertops and black lacquered accents adds to the masculinity of the design. While there’s not a specific type of “lounge space” flooring, you’ll want to choose a Karndean floor that complements your style, as our Ignea does in the moodboard below. In the home theater shown above, the rustic grays of Reclaimed Redwood perfectly tie in with the modern farmhouse style of the home.
