Taking inspiration from nature this Thanksgiving

As we move further into winter, Thanksgiving provides a perfect opportunity to enjoy the vibrant colors of the season in our homes before the snowy, white blanket of winter settles in. Decorating your home in bright yellows, blazing oranges, and fresh greens is easy and affordable – just look to nature for inspiration!

Here are some of our favourite fresh and fun holiday decoration ideas…

Bring the outdoors inside by adorning your home with natural materials. Start by visiting local farm stands, craft stores, or even your neighborhood park, for inspiration and easy-to-use items. Remember, it’s not just the hues of fall which are so wonderful, the aroma of this time of year is quite glorious as well. Dried fruit decorations featuring oranges, limes, lemons, and cinnamon sticks are feast for the eye and nose! Here’s a great how-to-guide on drying fruit for decorative purposes.

When you’re ready to start decorating, remember that the dining table is often the main attraction. A reclaimed wood table will make a bold statement, but you don’t have to go that far to create a beautifully styled space.

Get creative with your centerpiece. Mix candles with a variety of items found amongst the foliage, such as pinecones, berries, pine sprigs, gourds, pomegranates, dried leaves or anything else you can discover. To keep with the theme, use honeycomb candles made from beeswax and a cornucopia basket or festive bowl to hold mixed fruit for an edible and visually appealing display. As you mix and match the warm, earthy colors of your fall décor, remember to incorporate greens and whites to add variety to the warm tones of the fall colors.

If you’re drawn to vintage theme, place mismatched silver utensils, vintage china, or pewter serving trays around your table to add character. Tie cloth napkins with twine, tucking in a sprig of berries for added effect.

Layering your decorations is an easy way to create an elegant visual with a great deal of depth and variety. Stack pumpkins (as pictured above) in graduated sizes on top of each other or layer plates with different finishes, colors, or textures. Asymmetrical layouts will have more of a natural feel.

For a modern twist, combine natural elements with shiny metals, glassware, crystal, or décor with clean lines. Natural centerpieces and earthy colors will stand out when placed on a clean, white tablecloth that serves as a neutral backdrop. Or look to contemporary flatware and white pumpkins to contrast dark, rustic table tops.

If you have a fireplace, the mantel is a great place for a showpiece decoration. Deer antlers or pheasant feathers can be combined with pumpkins, pinecones, leaves, and berries for a captivating centerpiece. Adding small natural elements to light fixtures, shelves, and other furnishings will help to complete the look.
