Specifying Flooring for Student Housing

Posted on the 4/9/2019 by Karndean Designflooring

Student housing is a significant consideration for high school students as they weigh their college options, so a high-quality offering is key to attracting applicants. Layouts of dorm rooms vary from singles to suites, some with common areas for studying and socializing in addition to living quarters.

With summer projects quickly approaching, it’s important that the flooring not only looks appealing and makes students feel at home, but is also durable enough to cope with the demands of student living and frequent move-ins and outs. Our luxury vinyl is regularly used across both residential and commercial settings, so you can’t go wrong with choosing one of our floors.

Residential Looks with Commercial Grade Durability

For many college freshmen, it’s their first time away from home. Our stylish designs allow you to create a warm and welcoming environment where students will feel right at home.

With wear layers up to 30mil, you can rely on Karndean Designflooring to withstand the high foot traffic levels in areas like hallways, bathrooms and common areas. Our K-Guard+ surface protection provides a hygienic and durable finish, has a history of premium performance, and will keep floors looking their best for years to come.

Individually Replaceable

Should a plank or tile become damaged, our gluedown and loose lay products may be easily and individually replaced. Our LooseLay and LooseLay Longboard products are particularly easy to replace because they do not require full-spread adhesive. On-site staff may simply pick up the damaged piece and replace it with a new one.

Acoustic Qualities

Communal living often presents challenges, noise being among them. In educational spaces like dormitories, students must be able to concentrate and study without distraction, so optimizing acoustics in these spaces is important to educational institutions. For enhanced acoustic qualities, choose our loose lay or rigid core products, which can significantly reduce noise transfer to the level below between 16 and 22 dB. View our technical data sheets for additional information. For superior acoustics, use our QuietChoice Premium Acoustic Underlayment, which is compatible with our gluedown, loose lay and rigid core products, to achieve an IIC rating of up to 72 (ASTM E492).
