Creating Space

Posted on the 12/05/2019 by Karndean Designflooring

We’re all looking to maximise the available space in our homes and we’re coming up with some really innovative ways of doing so… From man caves to craft rooms, she-sheds to reading nooks, here are some of our favourite clever uses of space.

Decorate with light. Use lighting to make your space feel bigger and brighter. Install sky lights or floor to ceiling windows for more natural light, and instead of opting for heavy curtains, look for sheer fabric drapes in cotton or voile. If you’re not able to maximise your natural light, mix bright, artificial lighting with light walls and floors to create a faux glow.

Create a new space. ‘She-Sheds’ are a relatively new concept, making use of spare outdoor space to create a feminine haven. This space can be used for anything; crafting, beauty treatments, gardening and can even be used as a home office. Our friends over at Barefoot Caravans have even developed portable outdoor spaces, perfect if you don't have the space for a full sized shed in your garden! She-sheds don’t need to fit in with the style of the home, giving you an opportunity to create a truly personal, creative space.

Make the most of what you have. If you don’t have the budget or space for a whole new room, you can still make use of existing alcoves, cupboards and spare wall space to create functional nooks. One of our favourite ideas is to transform a guest room closet into a home office area by installing a desk and shelves to create a workspace.

Alternatively, if your home is lacking in ready-made nooks, you can create your own - just simply paint a section on your wall, add a shelf and you're good to go! If you're looking for more ways to make the most of a small space - check out out our small spaces blog here.
