Interview with Lisa Wright

Spotlight on a Style Blogger: Lisa Wright, TOMFO

Karndean Designflooring

Making a sea change to Yamba, a small coastal town in northern New South Wales, Lisa Wright, also known as Sarah Preston to TOMFO blog readers, has brought alive her passion for DIY and interior design - taking a leap in building a whole new life in the process.

An online favourite for home décor projects, we caught up with the TOMFO founder, Lisa to talk about her unique style, design inspirations and her ultimate design project.

Q: What made you start your style and interiors blog, TOMFO?

Three years ago we lost my cousin, Tom. He was such an inspiration to everyone with a massive will to live an amazing life and we had a very special bond.

My blog TOMFO has two meanings really. It stands for Tomorrow's Family Organiser (for the family organiser I design), but I would say that the real meaning is to have Tom's name on everything I create and continue the inspiration he still gives me today.

Our ultimate project has become building our dream home and to make a complete lifestyle change to a simpler life - and I’d like to think Tom has been a big part of that. Hopefully, Tom and I can inspire others along the way to follow their dreams no matter what obstacles they face.

Q: Where do you get your inspiration?

Exploring Yamba on our country drives has been a key creative influence. Inspiration is all around and I get to draw ideas from my new surroundings and the people in it. The natural beauty and characteristics of our small community, including the beaches and sandstone formations in particular, allows me to add a touch of Yamba to my own collection - I love telling the story behind the creation of each piece.

Q: What’s the most important element you look for when stepping into a home?

The personal touches are what makes a house feel like a home, and this is what I find most fascinating. Being a graphic designer and art director, it's important to me that there's a story behind everything I create, and this also is also true when it comes to the DIY ideas I share on TOMFO. It makes it more meaningful and personal to the end-user.

Q: How would you describe your style?

I adore Nordic and Scandinavian style and it’s reflected in what I create. The clean look of black and white tones offer the ideal canvas to bring pops of colour throughout the décor. In the case of my own home, I’ve used the fresh and contemporary white wood styling of Karndean LooseLay on the floor. It’s the perfect neutral backdrop to add black and white pieces teamed with light wood in the décor that allows me to tell my story.

Q: Are there any trends you are incorporating in your projects?

As we’re becoming more aware of our impact on the environment, you’ll find that people are turning to more considered, old fashioned ways of interior design.  I’ve always appreciated the nature of DIY and incorporating upcycled pieces in amongst contemporary interiors. It not only brings a new lease of life to the piece, which could be an old furniture set or a reclaimed sink, but also gives it that popular re-purposed look which is so timeless.

The table (pictured below) was the first purchase my husband and I made together in Bali about 11 years ago, it was once dark, but we’ve sanded it back to reveal the natural colour of the wood and teamed it with new chairs.
