Basement Renovation Gets a Touch of “Eye Candy” with Karndean

Perhaps you’re more familiar Nina Caviggiola as Balkanina: lifestyle, motherhood, family and home blogger. Nina, her husband Tom, and two children live in a ranch style home in Wisconsin and, as they were preparing to welcome their second child earlier this year, decided to transform their basement from a storage area to a finished space and document the entire process on Nina’s blog and Instagram page.

Nina hoped to replace the existing concrete floor with a cozier, child friendly product that would match their hybrid modern farmhouse/Scandinavian interior style. With children and a dog with long nails, finding not just a beautiful floor, but a tough floor was a high priority.

“We searched ALL over the internet for durable flooring that also had a high design asset to it! Karndean stood out to me because of the many woodgrain looks and, most importantly, durability as we are a wild family of four (five if you count the dog)!” Nina said.

While we typically recommend an installation through an experienced luxury vinyl installer, Tom is a carpenter by trade and had previously tackled installing tile in both their previous and current homes, and felt confident taking on the installation of a Karndean rigid core product.

An early favorite, and ultimately Nina and Tom’s final selection, was Warm Ash RKP8013 from the Korlok Select rigid core range. A warm, mid-tone plank with a consistent neutral color, Warm Ash’s straight grain detailing allows a certain subtlety, which lends itself well to Nina and Tom’s home style.

“Warm Ash outdid itself. The floors are beautiful, have just enough texture and look just like wood, but are way more durable. The new space is not 100% complete yet, but the floors are FOR SURE the eye candy! They are more than what I could have dreamed up!”
