Exploring Pantone’s Colours of the Year 2021

Posted on the 09/07/2021 by Karndean Designflooring

Each year the designers at Pantone select a shade which they feel summarises the mood for the year ahead. This year, they have chosen not one but two Colours of the Year 2021: Ultimate Grey and Illuminating.

Experts at Pantone explained that they selected these shades as "practical and rock-solid but at the same time warming and optimistic” to offer us a much needed sense of positivity in these challenging and confusing times.

Pairing the quiet calmness and dependability of Ultimate Grey with the optimism of Illuminating, a sunshine yellow hue, Pantone inspires us to lift a cool neutral grey scheme and our spirits with cheerful pops of bold yellow. In our homes, these shades can be used individually or in combination to create a sense of resilience and hope that will help us cope with the draining complexity of life.

The cool mid-grey tones of Ultimate Grey would be the perfect base for a practical, monochrome kitchen, paired with materials that offer interest and texture such as marble worktops and herringbone flooring. We recommend choosing a floor design with harmonising cool grey tones such as Grey Brushed Oak from our multi-format Van Gogh range, with its hand brushed texture and mix of flowery grain and linear features.

The bright yellow tones of Illuminating offers a stimulating primary colour that is best used as an accessory colour in rooms where you wish to create a sense of energy and purpose to inspire creative thoughts, such as daytime living rooms and kitchens or in spaces short of natural light such as hallways and bathrooms.

For a bold scheme in an open plan living space, why not create a feature wall with the energising warm yellow of Illuminating balanced by the cool tones of Ultimate Grey on the remaining walls. Picking out woodwork in a darker shade of charcoal would add depth and elegance to the design.

 Lime Washed Oak

Adding warmer grey tones to this scheme with a wood design flooring in an interesting pattern would pick up the richness of the yellow hue and create a cosy relaxing space. Designs such as Lime Washed Oak from our Knight Tile herringbone range bring a textured sun-bleached driftwood appearance and can be combined with a full length plank in adjoining rooms for a cohesive look throughout the home.

Alternatively, for a lighter touch, why not introduce pops of sunshine yellow into your home with a feature chair or accessories such as cookware, cushions and lamps. As home designers release their spring collections we are sure to see plenty of options in Pantone’s colour choices for this year and we’re definitely looking forward to indulging in some retail therapy!
