Laura brings new life to her dated home

Posted on the 08/07/2021 by Karndean Designflooring

This month we are delighted to welcome guest blogger Laura Crombie to talk about her kitchen renovation story.

By day Laura is brand development director at Real Homes magazine but in her spare time she’s a home renovator extraordinaire, sharing her journey on Instagram at @lauracrombie.

“Hi, I’m Laura and I live with my husband and young daughter. We moved into our beautiful but dated 1960s house last summer and have been renovating it from top to bottom.

We started with a new boiler and full rewire, and then moved on to the prettier bits. The old living room was so big that we didn’t have enough furniture to fill it so I jokingly suggested turning it into a kitchen-diner... and the idea stuck.

The original kitchen was completely separate from the other living rooms which wasn’t great when trying to keep an eye on a toddler, so moving the kitchen into the heart of the house made perfect sense.

I’ve loved herringbone flooring for years and knew I wanted it in this room as it has the modern-meets-traditional feel I was after. We had Karndean in the hallway of our old house and I absolutely loved it. It’s beautiful, practical, hard wearing and easy to clean, so this was an obvious choice for our new space.

We took our time deciding on the floor design. I originally wanted something slightly paler and more Scandi looking but when we took the samples home after our design consultation we realised they felt too cold. In the end we picked out Savannah Oak from the Art Select range which I think adds a lovely warmth and character to the room.

We’ve done as much of the work ourselves as possible to save money. My husband, who has been on furlough for almost a year, taught himself how to do the plumbing and then I did all of the decorating. However, when it came to fitting the kitchen and flooring, we knew we needed to use professionals - you have to know your limits!

Our new kitchen-living-diner is definitely the heart of our home... in part because it’s the only room that’s finished! We spend almost all of our time in there and it’s lovely because my daughter can be playing in the sitting room, I can be cooking and my husband can be planning his next DIY project at the dining table. We’re all together but with enough space not to get under each other’s feet.

Our daughter has definitely influenced the style of our home! When we viewed the house, there was pastel pink carpet throughout most of the ground floor. She was only two at the time and started calling it ‘my pink house’. She wasn’t happy when we ripped up the carpet so I decided to paint some of the walls in a slightly more sophisticated pink to keep her happy. It’ll always be ‘the pink house’ now!”
