This month we are delighted to welcome guest blogger and interiors influencer Cara Sutherland, who has recently revamped her living room.
Last summer we moved into our beautiful new build cottage and set about making it our own. Recently we have transformed the living room to give it a more interesting and homely look.
With two small boys and a dog around, the pale grey carpet looked lovely but just didn’t work for us so I was keen to find an alternative that wasn’t just stunningly beautiful but could cope with everything my energetic family can throw at it.
When we bought the house it is was already completely built so we didn’t get to choose any of the interior. But actually I have loved how it was such a blank canvas. We knew we would add a faux fireplace immediately to give the room a focal point. I love the idea of simply having a hole for decorative items. I might fill it with something different when I get bored of the faux ram skull but for now I absolutely love it.
Alongside the idea of the fireplace, changing the flooring was always our intention. We used Karndean when we renovated our upstairs bathroom so I knew this would be a stylish and practical solution to flooring. The reason I love it is because it feels warm to stand on compared to hardwood flooring and there are so many different styles and ways to lay the flooring that you can create something you really love.
We visited our nearest Karndean Inspire studio, Creative Flooring in Berkshire, where we could view the full range and take advantage of their interactive design service. I loved the experience of going into store. It felt so relaxed and to be able to touch the samples made it so much easier to choose.
We already had an idea in mind of what style of flooring we would like and we chose a herringbone laying pattern with a decorative edge of one tile. The Pale Limed Oak (shown above) in a small plank from Karndean’s stylish Knight Tile collection works really well against our furniture and the flooring in the hallway. Pale Limed Oak also comes in a matching full length plank but we loved the character of the herringbone pattern. I had toyed with the idea of having a grey floor but I felt this complemented the space better.
The fitting process for us was done over two days which I was really amazed by! The Creative Flooring team started with removing the original flooring and then applying a screed to create the correct base for the floor planks to be laid. The next day was laying the flooring.
I’m so pleased with the result! I think the honey tones of the Pale Limed Oak planks perfectly balance the soft tones of Farrow and Ball’s Pigeon paint and the cosy sofas we found in DFS. The really awful weather we’ve had this winter has made it even more apparent how the living room is the hero room of our home. I really love it in there.
I feel that the new flooring will mean we can relax a little bit more in here now. Muddy dog paws aren’t going to send me into a panic as Karndean flooring is really easy to clean. It just feels so much more practical and so much more ‘me’ in here now.”
