Based in Howdenshire, Morgan & Quinn has been operating for more than 25 years as an independent retailer with established branches in Hull, Goole and Brough. In tribute to its success in the region, the team recently scooped the prestigious Retail Business of the Year title in the Goole and Howdenshire Business Awards.
As a Karndean Platinum Retailer, Morgan and Quinn stock our entire range of wood and stone luxury vinyl flooring designs, and pride themselves on offering a professional design service. It all started with Gary Quinn, managing director of Morgan and Quinn, who also introduced his son to the business at an early age. This month, Gary has taken time out to give us an insight into his success as a growing independent retailer.
Q. What made you go into retail?
I was a trainee fitter, so I started from the bottom and worked my way up.
Q. How long have you been in business?
For more than 40 Years now, the time has certainly flown by and there has been so many changes within the industry, some good and bad. We’ve always remained strong due to our commitment to our customer base and the areas we serve, and we’ve worked hard to uphold our position.
Having started out as a carpet fitter and then worked in sales for national carpet firms before establishing my own business, I hold experience at all levels in the field, which has given me a clear insight into my customers’ requirements. Likewise, I have instilled my commitment to quality and customer service in my team, including our young apprentices that we support as they take their first steps on the career ladder. Training the future talent is important to me.
Q. How long have you been a Karndean Retail Partner?
We first partnered with Karndean 18 years ago, and we haven’t looked back since. We’ve grown with the Karndean brand, and our customers still think it’s real wood or stone once installed!
Q. Why did you choose to partner with Karndean?
There designs always stand out, and they’re the brand leader in the luxury vinyl market. They’re advanced with new technologies and support us in our area.
Q. What would you say most of your customers are looking for when they come into choose a new floor?
Ultimately, they’re looking for professionalism and support. We pride ourselves on our attention to detail and high level of customer service. We offer honest, practical advice to customers and guide them through every step of the process, from developing the initial design concept and producing realistic mock-ups to show how a product would look in a room within their home to completing the installation to their complete satisfaction.
Q. How many Karndean designs do you currently display?
All, so more than 150.
Q. What is your favourite Karndean product or range?
I’m a huge fan of all Karndean’s designs, but Art Select is my personal favourite. Importantly for us, Karndean continue to offer the most innovative luxury vinyl tiles on the market today.
Q. What trends are you seeing emerge in flooring and/or what are your favourites?
There’s been a trend of late with our customers looking for a narrow plank, so Da Vinci is very popular at the moment for us. Industrial and concrete looks are also dominating, so any grey plank or tile designs are doing well, such as Opus Urbus and Da Vinci Limed Silk Oak.
Q. What’s the first or most important question you ask a customer?
What style are you trying to achieve?
Q. From a retailer’s perspective, what can a customer provide to help the decision process?
They have to have a room of choice, budget and an idea of colour in mind.
Q. What is your favourite sort of designflooring installation/project?
A traditional parquet design, using Art Select Parquet in a hallway or dining room.
Q. What has been the most unusual installation you’ve been a part of?
Recently, we were approached to fit out a range of caravans. However, one of my most memorable jobs was when we fitted 100 sq m of parquet flooring – it looked stunning! We may have taken a little longer over it than some fitters would, but we used lasers to get the 90 degree angles exactly right because we knew the customer would appreciate us going the extra mile to get it absolutely perfect.
