Accrington Stanley Football Club

Posted on the 01/01/2023 by Karndean Designflooring

THE BRIEF

When League One football team Accrington Stanley updated its sports bar it wanted to create a traditional pub environment suitable for use on match days but also for functions such as conferences, weddings and other events.

The Redz Bar building has a practical industrial style so it was key that the flooring should introduce a natural look with a touch of quality yet not appear pretentious. The club was keen that the venue should retain its down to earth atmosphere and be a space where team supporters, visiting fans and local residents would feel comfortable.

THE CONCEPT

To ensure that the large open plan space offered the flexibility to cope with large numbers on match days and a wide variety of business and social events, it was important that the interior design could adapt easily to accommodate different function requirements.

The stark industrial nature of the metal ceiling and exposed brick walls have been softened with a warm earthy colour scheme and practical yet comfortable seating. Introducing a biophilic element and adding interest and texture, oak design flooring in different laying patterns subtly identifies the various functional zones, which can be closed off with sliding Crittal doors to cater for smaller events.

THE LOOK

The warm red tones of the exposed brickwork have been picked up with a raw plaster effect on the walls and terracotta furnishings. This is balanced with charcoal grey woodwork and upholstered bench seating and two oak design flooring patterns.

Warm Brushed Oak from the Van Gogh range has been laid in a herringbone pattern in the main bar area, with 28x7 planks creating an oversized effect in keeping with the scale of the building. In the smaller event rooms, Spring Oak from the Art Select range in an intricate basket weave pattern offers a more intimate feel.

Imogen Woodage, senior interior designer at Space Invader Design explained: “We wanted the herringbone laying pattern to provide impact in the open plan bar area but without looking fussy so we decided to use larger planks. The client was also keen to use a basket weave pattern and this fits in nicely with the cosier scale of the smaller event spaces. The two laying patterns sit nicely together and subtly but effectively mark out the different zones.

“When we were choosing the flooring, a main consideration was durability as match days can be tough on flooring. We have found Karndean flooring to be a cost-effective solution that has not only added natural interest to the interior but has also proved to be easy to clean and hard-wearing enough to cope with a busy sports bar.”
