Sunrise Senior Living provides safe and dignified care for older adults no longer able to live independently, with 25 care homes across England and Wales. When four of its properties were due for refurbishment, inhouse interior design manager Danica Mrozek opted for a contemporary traditional style with quirky twists in keeping with the business’ commitment to providing high quality care in a home from home setting.
Each property includes an Assisted Living Bistro where residents can socialise and welcome visiting friends and family. These comfortable homely spaces feature a self-contained kitchen area and informal cafeteria seating which enables residents to prepare and enjoy a drink and light snack.
A homely atmosphere is enhanced with the use of domestic kitchen units which offer additional reassurance and encourage independence. Contemporary colour schemes in blues and greys, highlighted in accent colours such as yellow, orange or green, have created elegant yet cheerful interiors that reflects the Sunrise brand. In keeping with the high-end timeless look, each Bistro features a characterful wood design floor laid in herringbone pattern.
Whilst clearly belonging to the Sunrise family, each location has been given its own individual personality with different colourways and design aspects.
Sunrise Virginia Water in Surrey features bold blue kitchen units and statement mirror tiles with a neutral grey and taupe colour palette. Flooring in Blended Oak from the Da Vinci range, neatly finished with a simple border pattern, adds depth and texture to the pared back scheme. The 36 x 3” planks give a floorboard effect with authentic aged oak hues, distinctive grain textures and wide bevelled edges but have been laid in herringbone pattern for a modern look. At this property, the flooring flows through to the open plan residents’ dining area, giving a seamless sense of continuity.
At Sunrise Chorleywood in Hertfordshire a similar scheme is highlighted with a bold yellow tiled splashback in the kitchen area and the casual seating has been given a contemporary twist with lively upholstery. Meanwhile, at Sunrise Bassett in Hampshire the warm Blended Oak flooring sets off a cool soothing scheme of mid grey kitchen units highlighted with copper accents and sage green and charcoal plush upholstery.
The latest venue to be completed, Sunrise Cardiff features a new evolution of the Sunrise style with pastel grey-brown and smoky pinky-cream tones of Mountain Oak flooring from the Art Select range. Here the light and airy scheme features walls and kitchen units in the same cool shade of grey with comfortable tub chairs in bold orange and complementary grey-green upholstery adding an eye catching element to the design. Harking back to the original Sunrise style, the darker wood tone of the furniture links the past to the future.
When considering flooring for care settings such as these, Danica needed a product that could meet both the aesthetic and technical specifications of a residential healthcare setting. With a hard wearing, waterproof and hygienic surface that offers a slip resistance rating of R10-R11, Karndean flooring from the Da Vinci and Art Select collections amply met this brief.
As Danica, explained: “The flooring needed to have the correct slip rating and wear layer suitable for use in a high traffic area. Karndean products have the aesthetic of real wood without all the impracticalities of maintaining wood.
“We’re really keen to specify sustainable products where possible that are not only environmentally friendly in their manufacturing process but are also durable to ensure longevity. With everyone spending so much more time inside due to the pandemic, indoor air quality has become really important so it’s great that Karndean products are low emitting in terms of VOCs.”
