Homely design supports dementia living

Posted on the 24/05/2021 by Karndean Designflooring

Owned and managed by Runwood Homes, Liberty House in Doncaster is the latest addition to its portfolio of residential care homes. Designed to offer a home from home experience for long term and respite care as well as specialist dementia care, the interior features welcoming private accommodation and inspiring shared spaces to stimulate, comfort and engage residents.

The generous communal areas have been decorated with a modern classic English country home style in a calming neutral palette and natural textures. Using a range of complementary shades, such as warm yellow in the sitting room and cool blue in the hair salon, adds interest to the scheme and helps residents to differentiate between activity zones.

Key to providing a domestic look in a healthcare setting is the use of materials that have a homely aesthetic but also offer the technical specifications required for a clinical environment. Choosing Karndean flooring throughout the communal areas of the home, including the visitor reception, sitting and dining rooms and dedicated activity spaces, provides an authentic look of wood flooring with the additional benefits of a practical, hygienic and hard wearing surface.

Throughout these shared areas, where residents can relax, socialise with friends and family and take part in a programme of activities, the modern classic interior has been completed with a warm oak flooring. French Oak from the Van Gogh multi-format range offers the look of a traditional wood flooring in a light but warm blond oak design, complementing the interior’s pared back neutral colour palette.

In the sitting room, statement button back armchairs in a warm yellow introduce an elegant characterful aspect and are arranged to offer expansive views to the gardens through floor length windows and doors. A collection of interesting houseplants and artwork also acts to bring the outside indoors to help residents connect with nature.

The biophilic design has significant physical, mental and emotional benefits for residents with dementia while the familiar domestic look helps them to navigate and understand their environment, key factors to maintaining their wellbeing and independence for as long as possible. An open plan kitchen further supports independent living, enabling residents to make themselves a drink or snack.

Health and safety is a vital consideration in a care situation, with successful designs integrating technical specifications with comforting homely design. With a K-Guard+ surface protection system, the Van Gogh flooring provides a hygienic surface that is easy to keep clean on a daily basis. The floor also features an R10 slip resistance rating to reduce the risks of accidents and falls and is low in VOCs and other emissions to support a healthy environment.

Lee Collingham, director at LNC Property Developments, explained: “We have previously used Karndean flooring in other projects and have been impressed with the quality of the product. Our client at Runwood Homes had a clear idea of the interior style he was after and the French Oak design was the ideal choice to meet both design and technical specifications for this healthcare setting.”
