Think Pink with Barbiecore

Posted on the 2023-02-10 by Karndean Designflooring

With the eagerly awaited Barbie film sequel starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling due out this year, the world’s favourite doll has inspired a new obsession with pink in all its fabulous shades.

From vivid Barbie pink and fuschia to bubblegum and blush, pink is the colour of this season’s catwalks and of course it’s never long before the colours in our wardrobes are also taking centre stage in our living rooms, bedrooms and kitchens.

Pink is a happy colour, turning thoughts to love and romance, compassion and kindness. A shade of red that is soothing instead of stimulating, introducing pops of pink into our homes will give us a sense of health and wellbeing.

Barbiecore is a trend that is firmly tongue in cheek; a welcome touch of nostalgic that’s fun and whimsical. We all know that Barbie herself would go all out with the brightest pinks on every surface but you don’t need to go this far to get the light-hearted Barbiecore look. With a few cleverly chosen paints and accessories you can raise a smile and lift your spirits.

In the kitchen, consider combining pale pastel pink units with a deeper pink tiled or glass splashback. Alternatively, add small hints of pink with accessories and appliances – a hot pink kettle and toaster, pastel pink plates or bold artwork, the choice is yours.

In the living room or bedroom, balance brighter shades of pink with softer pastel hues for a calming effect. Pair blush pink on walls with hotter pink accents on rugs or cushions or turn it around with bold pink walls and palest pink soft furnishings, then accessorise with powder blue or lemon yellow and natural retro materials such as rattan.

When it comes to the floor, a cool grey toned floor will prevent a vibrant pink becoming overpowering while a light floor with the barest hint of red tones will enhance and add warmth to paler hues.

To accompany the hot vivid pink named after the lady herself, look to our fresh grey stone designs such as concrete or slate or our mid-toned woods with a touch of cooling grey such as lime washed or brushed oak. For a more opulent feel, take the floor darker with the rich tones of a character oak or salvaged barnwood design.

To give depth to the more delicate shades of pink, from baby pink to coral pink, opt for one of our lighter floor designs. Keep things cool with a whitewashed pine or frosted marble or add a warming hint of pinky-beige with a blush oak.
