2023 Colors of the Year Aim to Inspire

Posted on the 2022-12-21 by Karndean Designflooring

An overall departure from the soothing color palettes we’ve seen the past couple of years, the 2023 colors of the year (as named by paint and industry color authorities) include shades of white, black and vibrant pops of colors in between. If you’re looking to refresh some of your home spaces in the coming year, one of these colors may give you the inspiration you’ve been searching for. Plus, we add our recommendations of Karndean floors to pair with each color.

HGTV Home by Sherwin Williams: Darkroom

A shade of black doesn’t necessarily equate to a dark and moody space, it can also exude sophistication, as HGTV Home by Sherwin Williams’ Darkroom does. According to the company, Darkroom “this alluring black is a classic for heritage interiors, yet modernly retro for a throwback inspired interior.”

For a classic monochrome or even Art Deco-inspired interior, pair Darkroom with one of our marble visuals like our Palazzo Marble rigid core herringbone (also available in 18” x 24” tiles). If you prefer to go the modern retro route or want to add warmth to your space, our Pale Limed Oak (also available in rigid core) will add the touch of warmth you seek. For a more neutral flooring choice our Neutral Oak has some slight gray undertones that will complement Darkroom well.

Sherwin Williams: Redend Point

Perhaps you’re looking for a more calming, earthy influence. Sherwin Williams describes its color of the year, Redend Point as “minimal yet cozy” color that “creates a comforting backdrop for the everyday moments that matter.” This versatile color could be used nearly anywhere in the home, from a living rooms to bedrooms.

If you want to capitalize on the coziness, pair Redend Point with a floor that has rich warm tones like Character Walnut. If you love this color, but prefer your floor be the focal point, Marrakesh’s chalky terra tones and geometric forms allows for a playful incorporation of pattern. Or for a tile look that won’t focus from the color, consider Oxford Grey.

Behr: Blank Canvas

Perhaps you’re creating a space that allows you to recharge and be inspired. Behr takes this concept to the limit with its 2023 color of the year, Blank Canvas, described as “a hopeful and welcoming warm white with limitless possibilities to help transform any vision into a reality.”

While you could pair this color with nearly any of our luxury vinyl floors, our recommendations include Weathered Elm for a contemporary space; Taupe Oak for a traditional or transitional style; or Shadow Lace, whose light pattern could add some needed texture to a minimalist space.

PPG: Vining Ivy

PPG’s choice for color of the year is different from every other color of the year mentioned here. According to the company, Vining Ivy’s Carribbean aqua coloring with turquoise undertones “can be considered traditional, classic or elegant.”

To match traditional and classic styles, our Spring Oak and Glenmore Oak floors would beautifully complement Vining Ivy. For a more contemporary approach, look to Ashland.

Benjamin Moore: Raspberry Blush

If you’re looking to make a bold color statement in 2023, Benjamin Moore’s Raspberry Blush should do the trick. “This unapologetic shade of red orange” was “inspired by an artist’s desire to communicate through color, shape and sound.” If this color is too bold to use in an entire room, consider using it for an accent color – be it a wall, pillows, curtains or other décor.

With such a bright color, we recommend keeping the floor simple with something like Pearl Oak, Honey Oak (available in gluedown and rigid core) or Fumo.

Pantone: Viva Magenta

Equally bold is Pantone®’s 2023 color of the year, Viva Magenta. Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute says, “In this age of technology, we look to draw inspiration from nature and what is real…Rooted in the primordial, Viva Magenta reconnects us to original matter.”

Although this isn’t a paint color, if you’re inspired by similar shades we recommend Drift as a tile look to pair it with; Vanilla Oak for a contemporary look; or Limed Coastal Oak for a coastal-inspired or slightly rustic space.
