Each year, interior experts and paint executives meet behind closed doors to determine which colour should be the next “color of the year.” If you plan to incorporate these colours into your home décor, we’ve picked out complementary Karndean floors to make the perfect colour combinations.
Ultra Violet, Pantone Colour Institute
Ultra Violet is an ultra-bold, ultra-vibrant colour that makes a statement, so it is best used in moderation. According to Pantone, this colour is thought-provoking and “communicates originality, ingenuity, and visionary thinking that points towards the future.”
Ultra Violet could be paired with any neutral or cool colours. While Ultra Violet would look great with a number of Karndean Designflooring products, we would recommend Limed Jute Oak RP97, French Grey Oak LLP308, Washed Velvet Ash RKP8102, or Texas White Ash RKP8105 for a wood look; or Sindon CER21 and Cambric CER20 from our Da Vinci collection for a tile look. Overall, we looked for floors with a clean, smooth look, as floors with a lot of character would compete too much with Ultra Violet.
Oceanside, Sherwin Williams
Live on the adventurous side with Sherwin Williams’ colour of the year, Oceanside, which “offers a sense of the familiar with a hint of the unknown.” We envision this jewel tone being used on a statement wall or as an accent colour, similar to Ultra Violet.
Our colour pairings for Oceanside align with our selections for Ultra Violet – cool neutrals and grays. Our favorites include Sundown Oak HC04, Country Oak LLP92/VGW81T, Neutral Oak LLP307 or Warm Ash RKP8103 in wood looks; or Portland Stone ST13 in a stone look.
In the Moment, Behr

In contrast to the other colours of the year, Behr offers a softer alternative – a soothing blend of gray, blue and green called In the Moment. As the name suggests, this colour is meant to be a calming presence for moments of self-care and relaxation. According to Behr, this color is “ideal for working with traditional, modern, coastal and global décor,” and we couldn’t agree more.
If you’d like to achieve a light, airy look, pair this colour with Limed Linen Oak RP98 or Reclaimed French Oak RKP8109. For a more natural look, Natural Oak RP102, Taupe Oak LLP309 and Canadian Urban Oak RKP8116 complement In the Moment well. We could also see this colour paired with Indiana LLT202 in a kitchen or bathroom.
Caliente, Benjamin Moore
While our first three colours were jewel tones, Benjamin Moore chose to heat things up with their 2018 choice – Caliente. This powerful colour will bring energy to a space, but as with our preview two colours, we suggest using Caliente in moderation, unless it’s in a formal dining or living room.
This warm tone gives some of our more classic and traditional-style floors an opportunity to shine. Try pairing Caliente with Dawn Oak HC01, Blended Oak RP95, Smoked Oak VGW70T, Stamford LLP109 or Antique French Oak RKP8110. Or use Caliente with Georgia LLT206 to create an industrial-style kitchen.
Black Flame, PPG Paints

PPG Paints puts a new spin on black with its colour of the year, incorporating shades of indigo, to create a timeless shade. “Black Flame acts like a black curtain, allowing your other décor elements to take center stage,” said Dee Schlotter, PPG senior colour marketing manager.
This neutral backdrop allows for practically unlimited floor pairing possibilities. We envision this colour with Arrado WP325, Mid Limed Oak KP96, Smoked Butternut RKP8107, Character Walnut LLP315 (especially in a formal dining room), Portland Stone ST13 in a bathroom, or in a kitchen with the concrete inspired Colorado LLT201.
