Designer Peter Fallico, host of HGTV’s long-running Home to Stay and Home to Flip series, had always relied exclusively on natural wood and stone materials. It wasn’t until he discovered Karndean - and realized the design capabilities of luxury vinyl tile (LVT) flooring - that he got a lot more creative with his flooring designs.

One of Peter’s featured flips, a 1930’s era upscale urban home, needed a major remodel to suit a young family of four. It was the potential of the neglected dark basement that inspired Peter to use the space for a large family rec room, guest bedroom, full bathroom and laundry room. Choosing not to use real wood or stone for practical reasons, Peter opted to get the look with a Karndean stone look floor, detailed with a wood border inlay. Not only is the new space warm, light and inviting, the floor is a smart choice as it is water-resistant and kid-friendly.

People often think of the laundry room as a damp, dark space where dirty laundry is hidden until cleaning day. Peter wouldn’t stand for that. He turned the space into a bright and inviting area with a unique design that is still practical for the space.
Peter’s Design Tip:
Use a light color palette in spaces that offer little or no natural light. Set pot lights on dimmers to provide just the right amount of light where and when you need it.
Peter added character by creating the look of a “carpet” in this entranceway by featuring Art Select Sundown Oak planks as borders with Opus Terra tiles and design strips. Peter continued the theme of mixing wood and stone by adding wood furniture to help tie the plank borders into the design of the room.
Rethink the way you define spaces in an open-concept floor plan. The kitchen below mixed wood and tile LVT to section off the main cooking area and create a more organized space.
