5 tips to maintain a pet-friendly floor

Karndean Designflooring

They’re adorable and part of the family – but our pets can be oh so messy! Here are our top five tips to pet-proof your home without compromising on style.

1. Get out the nail clippers

Any pet owner knows how quickly their pet's nails grow, and even though keeping them still long enough to get them trimmed can be quite a task in itself it's very important - not only for their own care and health, but also to protect your furniture and floors.

Luxury vinyl flooring is a top choice for many pet owners because of its durable K-Guard+ surface protection. This hardwearing wear layer is more resistant to light scratching and can be easily stripped and sealed using our Remove and Refresh products, making the floor as good as new in half the time it takes to refresh and buff real timber flooring. What’s more, it's softer underfoot than natural wood and stone floors, making the pitter-patter of pet nails across the floor seem much quieter.

2. Spot clean promptly

Let’s face it, accidents happen - especially if your furry new family member is still learning the ropes. When the inevitable happens, be sure to clean up the mess as soon as possible using Karndean Clean or a generic vinyl cleaner with low a pH. Like with any floor covering, if mess is left, it could cause damage or discoloration to your floor.

3. Disguise the paw prints

Should you find yourself at the point of home renovation or if you're looking to buy a new house, consider a more varied design on the floor that is forgiving to surface scratches and dirt that comes from pets. Wood look planks with busier grains and knots will hide dirt much better than planks with less variation.

4. Add a welcome mat

As the main point in and out of the house, front and back doors see lots of traffic. Use a natural latex backed mat at the entrance to every exterior doorway to help catch any mess your pets may drag in. It’s also worth putting a mat under their food or water bowl to catch excess water - making it even easier for you to maintain your floor.

5. Choose the right space

Try and feed your pet in an area that is easy to clean. In areas such as the kitchen or laundry, it’s much easier to mop up spills or clean up food without having to move furniture around. If your pet is particularly boisterous or excitable, it may be worth investing in a natural latex backed rug for the area where your pet usually plays with toys.
