Just five years after becoming a gold Karndean retail partner, Brian Savo, owner of Nantucket Custom Flooring in Branford, CT, has opened a new storefront - LV by Nantucket - dedicated to luxury vinyl flooring and Karndean products.
We recently spoke with Savo about his experiences as a Karndean Designflooring retail partner.
Why did you go into retail?
Before going into retail, we mainly dealt with contractors who would refer homeowners and other customers to us with flooring requests. We opened Nantucket Custom Flooring in 2008.
What would you say most of your customers are looking in a new floor?
High quality flooring at a competitive price with lots of design options.
Why did you choose to partner with Karndean?
We have been a Karndean retail partner since 2012 and are currently a gold dealer, so we have all Karndean designs on display except for the Michelangelo range. They are one of the leading vendors in the field of luxury vinyl tile.
What is the first or most important question you ask a customer?
We always ask about the budget and time frame of the project first.
From a retailer’s perspective, what can a customer provide to help the decision process?
Our customers typically bring blueprints/sketches of the area of the home to give us an idea of the size and space. Some bring in samples of their cabinets, counter tops or paint selections to help us narrow down the many color and design options they have with a Karndean floor, or inspiration photos they’ve found on websites that they would like to match.
What trends are you seeing emerge in flooring?
Gray tones have been very popular, in both traditional hardwood flooring and luxury vinyl. Many customers are also looking for wider planks.
What has been the most unusual installation you’ve been a part of?
We don’t consider anything unusual, as people have all kinds of different tastes. The most interesting installation we have done was a yacht club that had to be rebuilt after a fire.
In addition to being a brand advocate for Karndean Designflooring, Savo is also an advocate for ALS awareness. On Thursday, August 31, Nantucket Custom Flooring hosted an ice bucket challenge to raise funds for the ALS Association and welcomed ice bucket challenge co-founder, Pat Quinn, to the event. This cause is of particular importance to Savo, who has been fighting ALS for nearly a decade.
