Pet Valu Case Study
- Pet Valu
Pet Valu, Inc. is a specialty retailer of pet food and pet-related supplies. With 350 franchised stores located throughout Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta, Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania and New Jersey, the company offers national and premium brands ofpet foods, private label pet foods and pet supplies. Select Pet Valu stores are also equipped with self-wash centers where pet owners can wash their pets.
To capture the organization’s natural and holistic approaches to pet care, Pet Valu management decided to update the look of its new and existing stores to create a more boutique-like feel. At the company’s new 5,000 square-foot store in Lemoyne, Pennsylvania, displays were made more inviting and authentic wood-look flooring – rather than stark white tile – was specified for a warmer look. The management team searched for a durable floor that would:
• Stand up to the daily traffic created by 100 to 150 daily customers and their pets
• Withstand the pressure and movement of pallet jacks used to stock product displays
• Be water and stain resistant, particularly in the pet wash areas
• Be easy to maintain over the long term
“We looked at quite a bit of flooring, and researched a number of flooring manufacturers,” commented Joe Dent, US General Manager of Pet Valu. “Friends in the flooring business recommended Karndean because a large, well-known retailer in our area had successfully used their flooring systems. I met with Karndean at the GlobalShop Show in Las Vegas, reviewed the product lines, and was very excited about what I saw.”
Joe and his Pet Valu colleagues selected Van Gogh in the Copper Gum finish (VGW33T) for use throughout the retail and wash areas of the store.
The Pet Valu team is extremely pleased with the look and performance of their new Karndean floor, and is currently planning to install Karndean products in six additional stores. Three of the installations will occur in the spring of 2011, and each location will use different Karndean products for a customized look.
