Dunkin' Donuts Case Study

- Dunkin' Donuts
Dunkin’ Donuts, the world’s largest coffee and baked goods chain, serves more than 3 million customers each day. In the fall of 2010, Heartland Restaurant Group – a Dunkin’ Brands, Inc. franchisee – opened a new location near the University of Pittsburgh.
Realizing that the typical Dunkin’ Donuts prototype would not have the visual appeal necessary to stand out and attract traffic in a congested area with neighboring restaurants and coffee houses, Joe Uhler, Heartland’s Real Estate Manager, began searching for construction materials that would support a more trendy, cool and collegiate look. In particular, he sought out flooring materials that would be:
- Easy to maintain in a high traffic environment
- Suitable for installation in an old building with wooden floor joists
- In compliance with the Dunkin’ Donuts corporate design standards
“I liked the fact that Karndean provided me with a variety of product options,”remarked Joe. “I sent over a picture of our space, and Karndean matched up the flooring selections to our Dunkin’ Donuts colors, which are central to our branding. They also worked the Dunkin’ Donuts logo right into the flooring – something that is really attractive and different. The products were easy to install, which saved us time and money. Most importantly, I’m pleased with the performance of these floors, and am comfortable having a lot of heavy foot traffic on them every day.”
Joe selected a combination of Art Select Oak Premier in the Midnight Oak finish (HC06) and DaVinci Stone in the Santi Limestone finish (LST05). Joe also discovered that Karndean flooring would be significantly less expensive than traditional ceramic tile. Dunkin’ Design, the construction and design division at Dunkin’ brands, is extremely pleased with the look of the new Karndean floor. Impressed with the floor’s performance, Heartland is considering additional locations for future installations.
